If you have decent water, the optimum approach is to use a flow through 
system with some sort of reservoir for dealing with chloramines. A set up 
like this will allow you to do 50% water changes or more every few days. 
Under these conditions tank parameters should be stable... if they arent 
then increase your flow rates. This is the approach that the best 
researchers use when looking at mineral nutrition in aquatic plants.
