Hi all,
I had a post a few months back about seeing colour enhancement in
nannacara taenia when I added chelated iron for my plants. I don't see a
dilemna. Peat does it, iron may well do it too. The fish responded
positely to an additive that my tapwater may well have lacked. I
believe, because the changes were so immediate, that the colours were
brought out by the stimulus of adding iron. several of these fish
survived the great Montreal ice-storm blackout, so it didn't seem to
weaken or stress them in any way.
If you are worrying about adding iron to jump up the colour of your
fish, get some plants and add iron to help them grow. Then, any apisto
changes become a side-effect of a tried and proven plant-keeping
practice...

Try adding some iron to the tank. When Ap. nijsseni first was imported,
the iron adding to produce the red in the ring was widely discussed.
I've always added some iron to my tanks (for the plants mainly) and
the Ap. nijsseni seem to benefit nicely. Mine (captive bred in Denmark)
have very nice red rings.

Diet should also be important. Lots of shrimp/beta-karotene should provoke
some red colour (just look at what's in the Tetra Rubin and similar products).
