Doug - can't speak for these guys specifically, but in general, this
type of thing is real. However, there are some provisos. For one, when
they mean assorted box, they mean assorted. You could get all of the
species or only one. Most often, you get mosly aggies. For another,
these generally come in very young, so it takes some time before you
even get a chance to sex them out and determine what you have. However,
you can sometimes get some real beauties this way. I've seen this kind
of assortment come into stores in the past. Once, the shipment was made
up entirely of Ap. sp. 4-stripe, with a few sp. Brietbinden mixed in.
This was about 1.5 years before 4-stripe was available to any
significance within the US. At other times, I've seen mostly aggies,
with neat things like Gephyra and iniridae etc. come in. One guy I know
got a box with some really small, undescript fry in it. He had a fairly
substanial loss of fish at first, and eventually got maybe 30-40% to
grow out. But what he had when he was done was just the nicest
yellow-tail aggies I have ever seen! (Frankly, I've never seen them
elsewhere).

Good luck if you try a shot.

Tom

Doug,

This is OK (actually a bit high), but don't think you'll be paying just $100. Air
freight is now around $250 per container I've heard - regardless of the shipping
weight. Then add probably another $150 to get them through customs and the cost
per fish is around $2.50. Still not bad - if all the fish survive and they are
something you want or can sell. This is why there is such a great difference in
the cost of the fish on the list and what people pay in their LFS. There is lots
of labor, loss, and other hidden costs in there. When I would get together with
others to ship in fish, we would have each person pay in advance - just to be
sure everyone shared the gains and losses equally.

Hi Doug and all,
Besides the shipping costs, you might end up getting a big box of poorly
i.d.'ed fish, which can sometimes be a bonus, but more often than not it
ain't. I used to work for a fish wholesaler who got the fish transhipped
from someone in florida- we'd order every apisto species the exporter had on
their lists and usually the Colombian stuff was A. sp. rotpunkt- regardless
of whether we ordered macmasteri, viejita, etc. I would say rotpunkt came in
about 80% of the time, sometimes we'd get macmasteri and a few of the others
(cactuoides and aggies were Peruvian) and sometimes something really great
like hongsloi and breitbinden would come in but very rarely...Just to let
you know, its a gamble... If I were you, make some buddies at a local fish
wholesaler and go cherry pick their imports, you'll find all kinds of cool
contaminants mixed in with the tetras, wild rams, etc.
